Methods: After completing the program, participants were asked if it had helped them learn about how to assist their child’s reading and spelling, whether they planned on using the resources provided, and if they would be likely to attend a future workshop building on the Boost program. This study is a preliminary evaluation of a program aiming to improve phonological awareness skills of parents in low socioeconomic status communities, and also provide these parents with strategies to support their child’s literacy development. Given the central role of parents in supporting the development of children’s early literacy skills, and that poor parental phonological awareness is associated with poorer child literacy outcomes, it is possible that improving parent phonological awareness may aid literacy development for at-risk children. The findings indicated that there are opportunities for candidates to develop their practice through course assignments that are aligned with the language and expectations of the edTPA.īackground: Phonological awareness is an important skill underpinning the development of early literacy. To support the alignment of early childhood coursework in a teacher preparation program with a Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), the purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a redesigned course assignment that was intended to support the edTPA. Therefore, faculty in teacher preparation programs are critical in supporting pre-service teachers in acquiring and developing the knowledge and skills in order to be effective and efficient in the classroom and to meet licensure requirements. In addition, teacher preparation programs must support candidates in maintaining knowledge of professional preparation and education competence that will guide student development. To guide and support teacher candidates in developing the knowledge and skills they need in the classroom, teacher preparation programs must prepare students in acquiring the experience and expertise needed to demonstrate mastery of general knowledge in the specific subject or content area. Pedagogical implications for textbook writers are suggested. The results also reveal variations among the textbooks in the amount of attention given to the different vocabulary knowledge aspects. The findings showed that textbooks for primary school levels place greater emphasis on form, followed by meaning and finally use, while in intermediate-level textbooks, the greatest attention is given to meaning, followed by use and then form. Applying Nation’s (2013) framework of word knowledge, a total of 1181 activities were examined. To achieve this, all the 12 EFL textbooks used in primary and middle Saudi schools were analysed. It investigates the activities in English textbooks that give attention to vocabulary to explore the amount of attention given to each dimension in a particular activity. The present study aims to fill this gap by investigating how the different vocabulary knowledge dimensions are addressed in the local Saudi EFL textbooks. It remains unclear how the different word knowledge dimensions are addressed in Saudi EFL textbooks and whether there is a variation among the textbooks in addressing the different dimensions. Little research, however, has focused on vocabulary knowledge dimensions in EFL textbooks. Previous research has shown that learning vocabulary involves a mastery of several knowledge dimensions. Vocabulary growth is of great importance, and textbooks are the main sources of vocabulary learning for many EFL learners.

Remember that all materials drill differently. With a sharp drill, the speed and feed will dictate the final hole quality. A hand held drill will work, but a drill press - or your lathe - will provide more control and usually a better result. The selection of drill type is far less important than drill sharpness and drilling technique. Drilling properly is crucial to achieving a quality hole. A centre punch mark, whether by hand with a prick punch or a spring loaded centre punch, will help the drill start drilling exactly where you wish with much less opportunity to wander at the start of the drillingĭrilling a hole may seem basic and can be thoughtlessly done. While it may seem obvious, many don't mechanically mark the centres of the blank for drilling. If you drill from the other end of the blank, you stand far greater chance of visual mismatch. The variation in the grain match from any drill centre error should be minimal. Mark your drill centres on the interface ends of your blank halves, then drill from those ends. Drilling haphazardly, without accounting for the interface, will not help with your grain alignment. You've gone to the trouble of minimising the kerf and planning for grain match between the top and bottom pieces. Tip 4 - drill the blank from the inside out This will help your orientation, since the outside marks on the surface of the blank material will disappear as you begin turning material away I also recommend marking the interface ends of the tubes after facing the glued-up blanks. It takes little effort and will make a visible difference in your final pen. You may want to adopt this marking procedure as a standard practice even when the blank material doesn't require it, thus becoming a habit for you. This will ensure the best grain match possible as you continue your work. You will need to know which ends are the top-to-bottom interface as you continue. Once you have achieved the best visual layout, take the opportunity to mark the cut line on the blank and also indicate the proper orientation of the interface ends for your subsequent processing. Tip 3 - mark the interface, minimise the kerf You may put the less interesting portion - or a flawed area - of the blank under the clip since it gets much less attention than the nib Plan your layout and process accordingly, so that the most stunning part of the blank material will end up there. The nib end of your pen will get the most visibility. Search for and use the most interesting part of the blank to help make your final result more appealing. Regardless of your selected material for the blank, there often is an interesting portion of the blank and part of lesser interest. Tip 2 - use the most interesting part of the blankĭo not simply divide the blank in half and be content with what you end up with. A stabilised, highly figured blank will usually be worth the investment A cutting from a piece of walnut (Juglans regia) may be in order for practice, but a sharp looking blank will be much more desirable as a gift or in the marketplace. The cost of the kit is a small price considering the value of your time added to the final result. Buy quality kits and components at your best price knowing the meaningful quality differences between the various styles, manufacturers, and retailers. You can pay too much for anything you purchase. Do not confuse paying a high price with getting high quality. When creating a gift or a for sale item in the higher end market, you must start with a kit with highest quality components. If your pen is intended for practice, or perhaps you intend to sell it at a local craft fair, then you can use less expensive kits for economy. The best way to end up with a quality result is to start with quality materials. These 20 items are certainly not all-inclusive but do cover the most important, most easily implemented to help with your journey in pen turning. While the 7mm (9/32in) kit is used as an example, many of these concepts will also apply to the various other kit styles and freestyle pens. There is not sufficient space here to cover these points exhaustively, but there is enough explanation to help you understand why these items are important and the part they can play in improving results. A compressor is a tool that helps you reduce the dynamic range of your recordings. If you don’t have an equalizer or a noise gate, you can also try using a compressor. You can use it to reduce the amount of reverb in your recordings. – The "Release" slider lets you adjust the speed at which the noise gate will stop reducing the volume of your audio file. – The "Attack" slider lets you adjust the speed at which the noise gate will reduce the volume of your audio file. – The "Threshold" slider lets you adjust the level at which the noise gate will start to reduce the volume of your audio file. There are a few different sliders that you can use to reduce reverb: These sliders let you adjust the tone of your audio file. The noise gate window has a number of different sliders. To use a noise gate, open your audio file in a audio editor like Adobe Audition or Audacity. It can be used to reduce the amount of reverb in your recordings. An equalizer is a tool that lets you adjust the tone of your audio files. There are a few different ways to get rid of reverb, but the most common is to use an equalizer. They will probably be the primary focus of any mix and you might not even have to amplify any of the other instruments (especially if they have their own amplifiers).Vox Stomplab 2G Reverb direct recording demo Probably the best idea when starting out is worry about the vocals first. Most of them have to do with bands in clubs, but the same basic techniques apply (this is overkill, but a great basic introduction to live sound reinforcement: ). To that end, you should try researching some live sound engineering techniques. Other people may have other ideas, but the main thing is to get the best sound possible for the group you're working with. And to me, "over-use" means anything more than +-6db on any frequency band. As you noted, things start to get strange very quickly when you over-use the equalization on a channel. I would also caution against using equalization (EQ) to try and solve a bad signal problem. For those shyer performers, you may need to give them a nudge in the channel gain department, but really if they are giving you a good, consistent signal to work with, it should be fine. ) and try to get your groups to use some of the basic handling and presence techniques in order to get a better sound. First, if you have any influence at all with the performing groups, search around the web about microphone technique (here's one. Some mics are worse than others about this, and you should get some time alone with the system and see if you can reproduce the problem to know for sure.įor the balance problems, there are other things to try. You might also be picking up 'handling noise' from your microphones. Some of the 'popping' sounds might be removed by simply buying new cables for your microphones and speakers and checking all of the cables (and mixing board channels and effects. Similarly, there might be some relatively easy fixes for these issues. I've worked with schools, churches and other organizations without a proper sound system and have been able to get some good basic mixes. The integration works really well - allowing you to access the WSL directory structure from Windows File Explorer by navigating to Network->wsl$ - if you cannot see the wsl$ share then just type in wsl$ into the address bar and then selecting the required WSL installation (you will note below that I got carried away and installed four WSL versions): īefore discovering the WSL File Explorer integration. Initially, I was typing long winded command lines like:Ĭp /mnt/c/Refinitiv/RTSDK-2.0.2.L1.win.rrg/Cpp-C/Ema/Examples/Training/Consumer/100_Series/100_MP_Streaming/Consumer.cpp. Any coding/editing was still done on Windows and copying the files/changes back and forth between Windows to Linux as required. My first experiments around WSL simply involved copying across the Linux versions of our SDKs and trying to build and run them. You can imagine my hopefulness when I first started hearing the great promises Microsoft were making around their new Windows Subsystem for Linux. However, I personally did not find that Docker offered me the same flexibility and integration suited to my workflow. Some of you may ask 'What about Docker?'- we have published some Docker Container Images for our Real-Time SDKs (see links below) which I find useful for basic testing. However, there was always the issue of reduced performance and the headache of maintaining the VM, configuring the network settings etc and VMs that mysteriously stopped working. Things got a bit easier with virtualisation products such as VMWare and VirtualBox - allowing me to use a GUI interface with Linux and only resort to a Linux shell when I absolutely had to. It's not like I did not want to learn Linux - just the infrequent usage and lack of time meant I never made any reasonable progress. I had to rely on tools like WinSCP and PuTTY to transfer files and access our Linux test machines. If all worked OK on Windows, then I would migrate it to Linux or try and recreate the issue on Linux as required. When possible I always did my coding or tried recreating a customer issue on Windows. I seriously struggled - the joys of Vi, the considerable difference between cmd.exe and the various Linux shells etc. But for someone who had spent most of their working life with Windows and MS-DOS, this did not come easy. So, I had to adapt and start familiarising myself with Linux. When I joined Reuters back in 2004 I discovered that our real-time streaming APIs came in both Windows and Linux versions and most of our clients' real-time data applications were deployed on Linux - which makes sense - improved performance and stability compared to Windows (certainly back then). I may have interacted with a SQL Server or Oracle systems over the years, but these would have always been via a Windows-based interface/utility. I have been a Windows developer for most of my career - I started with MS-DOS-based development before quickly moving onto Windows development. followed by the detailed steps I carried out in order to be able to edit, compile and run C++ & Java examples inside the WSL environment.an overview of some key relevant WSL + VS Code features I discovered.Whilst I will be using some of the examples from our Real-time SDKs - the notes below should be applicable to general C++ and Java development.
